The Daily Sketch- 11.10.2010

The Universal Monster Sub-set continues. Today with one of the most amazing special effects films of the time. At least in my opinion. Richard O’Brien put straight forward when he wrote “And Flash Gordon was there / In silver underwear / Claude Rains was The Invisible Man.”

Again, another James Whale classic from the 1933 film “The Invisible Man”, starring Claude Rains, Gloria Stuart and William Harrigan. Loosely based on the novel by H.G. Wells, it is the tale of a scientist, who finds a way of becoming invisible, but in doing so, he becomes murderously insane.

In order to achieve the effect that Claude Rains wasn’t there when his character took off the bandages, the director had Rains dressed completely in black velvet and filmed him in front of a black velvet background. I guess we can call this Black Screen effects, instead of Green Screen effects.
