Daily Sketch- 01.13.2012

It’s Friday the 13th. Are you worried? Are you filled with dread and anxiety? Do you think bad luck and tidings are just around the corner?

Well, stop that. It’s all a bunch of hooey. The only thing waiting for you is the latest Daily Sketch. It is the continuing voyages into the world of Star Trek. First Officers continue today with another called Number One by his commanding officer.

Commander William Thomas Riker of the Enterprise D, First Officer under Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Riker started out a pretty bold and ambitious officer, a bit arrogant and by-the-books, but as time went on he became more confident and reserved as the Enterprise’s Second in Command. Riker was romantically involved with the Ship’s Counselor Deanna Troi; the two finally wed shortly, after years of courtship, before Riker accept his own command as Captain of the USS Titan.

Now here is some fun goofy trivia for you. Before cruising the stars, actor Jonathan Frakes (he played Riker- keep up, folks) fought for Energy Conservation as Captain America. No joke- in the late 1970s Frakes was hired by Marvel Comics to portray the Star Spangled Avenger at promotional functions and conventions. Frakes also had to audition seven times in six weeks before landing the role of Commander Riker. Frakes went on to direct several episodes of the various Star Trek shows and two of the feature films- where he earned the nick name Two-Takes Frakes.

See ya Monday with more Star Trek.
