Hey howdy Bukaroos!
The Kidd is back and I’m here celebrating “Creator Owned Day” in the comic book industry. It is a day where comic fans, artists, writers, creators and even some publishers put out the word to people around the world wide web to go out and give some of the great Creator Owned books out there a shot. You never know you might just stumble on something you like.
For example- how many of you out there like AMC’s hit show “The Walking Dead”? Well guess what, before it was a TV hit, it was a Creator Owned comic. If you like the Walking Dead, you might wanna try Wasteland by Anthony Johnston, Christopher Mitten, Justin Greenwood and a few others. It is published by Oni Press. I just started reading this one and so far it is a neat post-apocalyptic tale.
Another fun Creator Owned book to check out was done by a buddy of mine, Lee Ferguson and writer Brandon Thomas. It’s called The Many Adventures of Miranda Mercury– it’s a great superhero story. Lots of fun action and a good story to boot.
For those of you who are new to the comic industry and it’s terms- Creator Owned simply means; a comic book that is creator owned, where the person(s) making the comic – usually the writer or artist or both – owns the stories, characters, plots, and has all licensing rights to the product. Most material from the larger publishers, like Marvel and DC Comics not creator owned. But generally most independent comic books are creator owned.
So here is some art from a Creator Owned project I am working on called “The Judas Cowl”- it is a superhero murder mystery. Here are some sketches for a character I am calling either Owl-Hawk or the Masked Owl. Originally he was called the Laughing Owl, but I have grown less happy with that name as I flesh out the character.
Any way- enjoy.
Happy Creator Owned day. Now go read some comics.
